The wait is over and our beloved CMP students have finally joined us! We are really excited to see what they are going to bring in the next several weeks and we have already been impressed with what they have achieved. As always it has been a great pleasure and honour to bring in some of the best students from Cambridge University and work with them over the course of 8 weeks – this year they are working on the Card Gaming AI project, looking into the application of an AI to play all 3 variants of Chinese Poker – open, closed and Pineapple as well as exploring some of the other projects we already have rolling at Dreams AI. But as you are all probably aware by now, it’s not just about the work we do together – it is about the time we spent together and we have been fortunate to have restrictions lifted in the UK so that we can enjoy face to face interactions with our new members and we’ve been trying to do the most out of it by getting to know each other, playing board games, going climbing and most importantly having White Board Sessions back!

At DreamsAI I have had so many opportunities to learn while I work. It's also really cool that the company is putting resources towards these CMP projects that are interesting but may not be profitable. At the end of the day, the priority here is on discovery and learning.

I was rather worried after being picked to be in the project that I would be seen as stupid and a weaker member of the team though once I met everyone I felt so included and I feel like a valuable member of the team. We are all working together and helping each other and the whole project is a lot of fun doing work that ultimately, I would have done had I not been at dreams-ai (though probably anything I would've produced alone would've been awful). I'm really excited to see if Bryan's idea of an AI that can use transferrable strategies to play all 3 games we're going to look at can work out, it seems like a fascinating idea that's really trying to replicate human learning with a computer.

Although much of the pandemic has meant that interactive opportunities were limited, I felt that I was always involved closely with the team. From regular conversation and project meetings to enjoyable board game nights, DreamsAi were particularly welcoming and friendly to me and made me feel comfortable to speak openly about anything on my mind. The help and insights that I was able to gain from other team members in project discussions enabled me to carry myself in with confidence in my work, which I personally value a lot. Hopefully, I can use this experience to gain new knowledge in the weeks to come.

Everyone is/was very friendly and we regularly went to do activities together eg.: Indoor wall climbing, Football, Weekly board games. The company is very much trying to make sure you have a good time and it’s not purely about the work. Bryan (the CTO), is trying to find the potential in people. He wants to figure out what you can do and use your knowledge/ experience to contribute to more projects than you initially thought you could. I have applied to the CMP Card Gaming AI summer project, but I was offered to be able to work on much bigger and more important projects. This flexibility and openness impressed me – overall the projects are very interesting and hopefully, we can have an impressive presentation at the end.
